Some systems that are only partially known
produce a huge amount of data; this data often contains valuable
information that may be very helpful and may even resemble a gold vain to
the eyes of a corporate manager. The
dimension of large databases and their growing speed, makes it
difficult for a human to analyze and extract any useful information
from them, even with the use of classic statistical tools. Knowledge
Discovery in Databases (KDD) combines traditional techniques with many
resources developed into the Artificial Intelligence (A I) area. On these
applications the term Data Mining has been more accepted.
In some cases the Data Mining tools coming from AI are new, not well
understood, and caressing a formal theoretical support. But in this case
the goal is so priced, that practical results override the academic
elegance.
